Optimize packaging for deliveries

Why is this important?

Packaging is one of the most important contributors to misdelivery. A misdelivery happens primarily for two reasons: 1) The driver delivers the wrong item at a stop 2) The driver forgets to deliver an item at a stop.

Good packaging combined with good labeling will decrease delivery issues significantly.

Option 1: Putting everything in a single bag or box - The safest

  • This method prevents the driver from delivering the wrong item or forgetting to deliver something. Everything that will be delivered at a stop is in a single box.

Option 2: Tie items together (Second best)

  • You can use color-coded tape to tie bags and items together. By doing that, you will prevent the driver from mismatching items or forgetting something because everything will be tied together. If the tape is easy to tear, it can also allow the driver to break the tie and use both hands for carrying.

Option 3: Color code items (Not suggested)

  • You can use different colored tapes to color-code items. That will prevent the driver from mismatching an item at a stop. However, the driver might still forget to deliver an item because the color code might be hidden behind another item and not visible. We do not suggest you use this method.

Option 4: Only rely on label (Avoid)

  • Labels can be misread or easily mixed. Particularly when the driver is rushed due to street parking or traffic. Drivers tend to read the labels a couple feet away from the trunk. Using the label-only method will significantly increase the misdelivery rate.

By following these packaging best practices, you can significantly reduce the error rate.
